Remington 870 and Mossberg 500
While more veteran shooters may use the Nova, sheer volume still belongs to the Remington 870. That, as much as anything, is simply a reflection of the market itself. Also in the mix is the Mossberg 500. Each of these shotguns has been produced in countless variations over the years, and there is a wide mix of customized former field models and factory-fresh tactical variants from both brands currently enjoying good use in 3-gun.
Box Magazine-Fed Shotguns
The holy grail of shotgunning is the absolutely reliable, yet affordable box magazine-fed shotgun design. In the imported Saiga 12 shotguns, there is certainly affordability, with guns retailing from Russian American Armory for around the price of a new polymer-framed pistol and even some pump-action shotguns. However, to make one run reliably enough for competition, the Saiga’s price balloons into one more closely represented by an Open-style 2011 pistol.
Nevertheless, customized Saiga shotguns from R&R and Firebird Precision, among a select few others, have grown steadily in use among Open shooters. Firebird also unveiled a new twist on the box magazine-fed shotgun at the 2012 SHOT Show, when it introduced its highly tuned version of the Akdal MKA 1919, a Turkish import manufactured by Akdal Arms. Externally, the Firebird’s improved 1919 is all AR-15, in terms of button and controls, which will sit well with most 3-gunners. Internally, the 1919 more closely resembles a Remington 1100, which has been successful in 3-gun since the days of SOF. Amazingly, the Firebird 1919 retails for $1,800—if this guns runs anywhere close to as reliably as a tuned Saiga, and for a fraction of the cost, the balance of power in Open shotguns could be at the beginning of a major shift.
